Plein Air Workshop at Olana - Hudson, NY

Plein Air Workshop at Olana
Three-Day Painting Workshop with Dan Graziano
August 24-26, 2018    Hudson, New York

Olana was the home, studio and artist-designed landscape of the nineteenth-century landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church, the premier artist of the Hudson River Valley art movement.  Church spent forty years designing and perfecting his vision for the 250 acre Olana estate, embracing architecture, art and landscape into one integrated environment.  His design combined natural landforms with the careful layout of carriage drives, ponds and extensive plantings of trees and shrubs to conceal, reveal and frame vistas of the property and the wider Hudson Valley.

This unique workshop provides participants the opportunity to paint within the singular beauty of the Olana estate.  The first day begins with a discussion of the “basics” of painting (from materials to paint handling) as well as the fundamentals of composition, color, value, edges and perspective. Instruction will focus on painting en plein air, including how to develop greater skills of observation, simplification, and quickly painting “wet on wet” (alla prima) to translate what you see and experience into strong paintings. Participants will paint outdoors at different locations each day and include a short painting demo by Dan.

Workshop fee is $350.  Students supply their own art supplies and equipment - lunch is not provided.  To register for this workshop,  CLICK HERE.

Bide-A-While Workshop has been canceled

My October workshop in Texas has been canceled due to the devastation in the Houston area brought by Hurricane Harvey. With a full workshop and growing wait list, this would have been my first workshop at the beautiful Bide-A-While artist retreat located in the picturesque bayou country of Dickinson, Texas. Sunday night, I heard from owner Sue Bown who characterized the flooding and damage as "everything lost." She has begun the process of repair and reconstruction and I believe that Bide-A-While will again be the magnificent and magical place that Sue originally created. It is my sincere hope that we can offer this workshop again at some future date when Bide-A-While has been fully restored. My thoughts and prayers are with Sue and her husband Rod, as well as everyone whose life has been affected by this horrific event.
Here is a story published in the LA Times last Thursday about the Bide-A-While retreat, the destruction caused by Harvey and the challenges ahead. http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-harvey-artists-cottages-20170905-htmlstory.html

New Three-Day Workshop in Texas

I am pleased to announce that I have just scheduled a new workshop for October 6-8 at the beautiful Bide-A-While artist retreat in Dickinson, Texas.

Whether you are a beginner picking up a brush for the first time or someone returning to art after a long time away from the easel, this workshop is designed to be both informative and fun. Beginning with a discussion on the “basics” of painting (from materials to paint handling), the workshop will also address the fundamentals of composition, color, value, edges and perspective. I will begin each day with a short painting demo with explanation of my process along the way.

On the first day of the workshop, participants will  work from a still life to paint quick studies that incorporate the fundamentals discussed, with plenty of one-on-one individual instruction throughout the day.  The second day of the workshop will explore techniques to quickly transfer the important elements of a reference photo to the canvas, as well as creating an artistic painting rather than simply rendering a photograph.  The third day of the workshop will focus on painting en plein air, including how to develop greater skills of observation, simplification,  and quickly painting “wet on wet” (alla prima) to translate what you see and experience into strong paintings. Participants will paint outdoors within the picturesque Bide-A-While retreat.   The basic goal for each day of this workshop will be to develop an ability to create loose, accurate, expressive and “painterly” paintings!

Workshop fee is $285.00.  Art supplies and materials are not included in the workshop fee.  An additional $150 facility fee is also required. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at the workshop each day with complimentary sodas, bottled water, teas and coffee throughout each day.

There will be an arrival reception Thursday evening (October 5th) with wine, cheese and appetizers to welcome all participants. On one of the evenings, the group will go to Galveston Island to visit several galleries and enjoy dinner.

Overnight lodging at the Bide-A-While Artist Retreat is also available for $60 per night.  CLICK HERE for a downloadable registration form and suggested materials list.
